Inna lillah wa inna ilayhi rajioon
الشيخ عبد الباسط هاشم إلى رحمة الله
One of the world’s greatest scholars of Quran passed away today, of 92 years of age.
Abdulbasit Hashim was born in 1928, and started studying the Quran at a
very young age. He lost his eyesight at 5 due to a disease. That didn’t stop him from memorizing the whole Quran at the age of 8, and mastered the ten modes of the Quran by age 19.
By the time he turned 40, he was among the highest esteemed scholars of Quran in the world, with the highest in their isnaad (chain of narration) to the Prophet.
He taught the Quran to thousands of students. Until this very last summer (at age 91!), he would snooze while a student is reciting, then if the student made an error he would immediately wake up and correct him. His memory of the Quran was unmatched by anyone of his generation.
May Allāh have mercy on him, and have mercy on us after losing him.
